The National School of Medicine (NAM) appointed Roxana C. Chicas, PhD, RN, FAAN, faculty member at Emory University. Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursingto contribute to Association of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).part of NAM organizations program.
Chicas is one of seven health professionals from different institutions selected for the overall NAM Fellowships program.
AAN Association at NAM offers talented, early-career health professionals the opportunity to participate in evidence-based health care or public health studies that improve care and access to patient care in practice of domestic and global health care.
Chosen on the basis of their professional qualities, reputation and achievements, Chicas and other NAM Fellows across health care disciplines will collaborate with prominent researchers, policymakers and nurses during the their two-year reunion. They will also participate in efforts similar to those National Schools of Science, Engineering and Medicine to provide unbiased, scientific, and evidence-based guidance to policymakers, academic leaders, health care administrators, and the public.
Chicas is an assistant professor at the Emory School of Nursing and a nurse scientist specializing in occupational and environmental health and nephrology. His research program seeks to improve the health of underrepresented and vulnerable Latinx communities, particularly agricultural workers. Using real-time biomonitoring toolshim conducted the first intervention study to examine ways to reduce core body temperature and improve health among farmworkers in the United States.
“I am honored to be selected for this unique experience of working as an AAN Fellow at NAM,” Chicas said. “This opportunity will allow me to improve my knowledge and collaborate with colleagues to work for a more equitable future. It is very important to conduct research on behalf of people who are underserved by the health system, especially among immigrants who may also face language and other serious barriers to interaction and access to measures that improve their lives.”
Fellows will continue their primary academic or research activities while doing part-time work for two years in the National Academies’ health and science policy work. They will also work with an expert study committee or round table related to their professional interests, including contributing to reports or other products.
